Qualifications

To qualify for an initial appointment (8-year term) to the office of notary public in the State of Indiana, one must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older.

  • Be a resident of the State of Indiana.

  • Have not been convicted of a crime resulted in a sentence exceeding six months imprisonment. (Ind. Code 5-8-3-1)

  • Submit an application to be appointed a notary public, and pay a $5 State appointment fee.

  • Obtain a surety bond in the amount of $5,000, available from The American Association of Notaries!

    IMPORTANT: When ordering a notary package, enter your name exactly as you like your name to be on your notary commission (see instructions). Packages prices do not include the $5 state application fee.

    You should receive your prepaid Indiana notary bond and application in 4-7 business days. You will receive your notary supplies once approved.

    IMPORTANT: The Secretary of State does not have an online system for accepting applications completed and submitted online.
